Late May Blog

When we get up in the morning, we often look out of the bathroom window at the garden and bird feeders. Imagine our surprise to see a fledgling buzzard sitting on the conservatory roof also looking at the bird feeders. A male blackbird was in the tree making a lot of noise warning everyone of his presence and a magpie joined him on the room for a chat to make sure he understood where he was. What a wonderful start to the day. Many of the birds have had one lot of fledglings are now nesting again and we have seen some pairs making new nests. They air can be very busy with the birds fetching food, having a drink or having a bath. Having designed the garden with wild life in mind it is so rewarding. The first dragonflies and damsel flies have emerged and are busy over the water, always a lovely site.

It looks as if life is beginning to open up again, the beaches were very busy last weekend and with the continuing glorious weather it is not surprising that people want to get out and feel free again. Social distancing on many of the coastal paths is impossible and also when the beaches get full people have no choice but to sit very close together. Shops can open but no sign of restaurants or accommodation being able to in the near future.

I have planted some climbing courgettes this year as an experiment and this weekend we had some flowers open with courgettes attached. The glorious weather over the last couple of months means that the garden is looking beautiful and the vegetables are going to be early as the tomatoes are not only in flower but have set fruit. I just hope the lack of rain does not prevent the fruit from swelling. We are watering the peach, from our saved rain water, and the fruit is swelling, the washing up water, when cold goes on the pots or mangetout. When it is this dry, we can’t afford to just put the water down the drain.

To celebrate the last day of May and feeling hot and slightly lazy, we went for a swim. Our first swim this year and it was heavenly. I love fresh water swimming, and watching the damselflies and dragon flies laying their eggs and having the swallows dip in the water for a drink right in front of you is amazing. As it is another blue skied day I think I will end it with a swim.
